Q: What can Rent-Instead do for me?
A: Rent-Instead will help you take advantage and make money with those items you have around the house. Or, Rent-Instead will help you save money by putting you together with someone that has an item you need for a short time.
 
Q: How can I make money?
A: Click on “list an Item”. Then wait to be contacted by a Renter after you receive a rental confirmation notice from us. You’ll receive your full payment (minus a small Rent-Instead fee) after you successfully check your item back in.
 
Q: What if I want to try an item out to see if I want to buy it?
A: No problem. Select an item that the Owner is willing to do a Buy Instead then rent it for as long as you like to see if you want to buy it.
 
Q: If I can’t afford to Buy Instead, what can I do?
A: Find an item that the Owner will allow a Rent To Own (RTO) transaction on. You can rent it and some portion of the rent will apply towards buying it. The portion will be determined by the Owner.
 
Q: What does it cost to get started listing?
A: Listings are FREE and there are no membership fees so it costs absolutely NOTHING to get started.
 
Q: What if I just want to look?
A: Be our guest. There is no charge and you don’t even have to register.
 
Q: What kinds of things can I rent?
A: All kinds. Need a fishing pole or a fishing boat? Want to ride a horse or just a cool ride? We have it all because people have it all to rent.
 
Q: How many items can I rent at a time?
A: As many as you want!
 
Q: Is there a way to contact the owner with questions before I decide to rent?
A: Yes, we have an easy messaging system set up for exactly those kinds of requests.
 
Q: Why should I rent from Rent-Instead versus local rental businesses?
A:: Rent-Instead is a one-stop location for anything and everything including unique items such as art work or machine tools, that can be very difficult to find in any rental shop. Rent-Instead rentals are transacted on-line so it’s effortless and is open for business 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our owner’s rates are per day, per week and per month, so you can save money while keeping your rental item longer. Some owners are willing to ship or deliver to your door step. How’s that for convenience? Moreover, you’ll be supporting a community of people who care about a sustainable future where the earth’s precious resources are preserved.
 
Q: What if I rent an item and decide I would like to buy it. Will Rent-Instead let me do that?
A:The real question is, will the Owner let you do that? If the Owner lists their rental item with a “Buy Instead” and/or a “Rent to Own” option, you can!
 
Q: I like my stuff but I would like to make some extra money. How do I make sure the things I rent out, don’t get damaged?
A: As an owner, you set the deposit amount that is held in the Renter’s credit card account until you are entirely satisfied that you’re item is in fine shape when it’s returned.
 
Q: If I rent something that isn’t exactly what I expected, what can I do?
A: Rent-Instead has an “Unacceptable Rental” option, that allows you to stop the rental at any time and send the item back to it’s owner. A complementary tool provides for a convenient method to come to an agreement on a rental payment acceptable to both Owner and Renter.
 
Q: I have a rental business. Can I also advertise on Rent-Instead?
A: Rent-Instead doesn’t provide any space for advertising other than rental listings, however, business owners can list items just like individuals.
 
Q: I have 4 identical items I’d like to rent. How many listings do I need to submit?
A: Each rental item has it’s own calendar so you would need 4 separate listings.
 
Q: Rent-Instead often describes itself as a sustainable marketplace. What does this mean?
A: : Rent-Instead adds value to the items you already possess so they are maintained and sustained. Also, renting instead of buying, means less energy and resources are required to manufacture new things, creating a truly sustainable economy.
 
Q: Is there anything I can’t list?
A: : Yes, Rent-Instead prohibits renting or selling such things as weapons, anything that is living and anything that is illegal, along with several other types of items. Please review Rent-Instead’s Terms and Conditions for a complete list of items that are prohibited from being advertised/displayed on our site.
 
Q: Do I have to rent my item to any Renter that submits a request?
A: First of all, you can block out any dates that you don’t want to rent your item at any time. However, if you forgot to do this before leaving on vacation, etc. and a rental request is submitted, you can simply cancel the rental transaction. You can do this by going into “My Rent-Instead”, selecting the transaction number in the Owner’s Section under “Pending Rentals”, and select “Cancel Rental”.
